The Government have asked schools to focus on 'Narrowing the Gap'
between a certain group of children, and their peers. This is usually
based on their eligibility for free school meals, although other
circumstances are also considered.
However, it is not ring-fenced to those children and can be spent in any way that the school sees fit, so long as the school is able to demonstrate that the specific needs of the FSM pupils have been addressed and how this additional – and specific – funding is being used for this purpose.
School leaders and governing bodies need to ensure that their school is tracking the progress of pupils in receipt of free school meals (FSM) to demonstrate how the school is using the Pupil Premium. It is for the school to determine how best to use the funding .
From September 2012 school leaders and governing bodies need to ensure that their school is publishing information to parents about how all Pupil Premium funding has been used and what the impact has been on learning, attainment and pupil wellbeing and/or pastoral care.
All schools need to ensure that they are able to give a full account of the use of Pupil Premium funding, allocated to the school on the basis of those pupils who are in receipt of free school meals. We have part funded a member of staff to work within the Federation who specialises in identifying academic strengths and weaknesses for the children who cause us concern. As well as being a SENDCo, this non classroom based teacher is qualified in the diagnosis of Learning Difficulties eg Dyslexia, Auditory Processing Disorder, Working Memory, to a higher and accredited level.
This staff member liaises with the team around the child, and meets with parents to help engage them in strategies to support their children's progress.
This teacher is also responsible for holding extra meetings with parents called 'Structured Conversations' in which parents are actively engaged in the setting of SMART targets (Specific - Measurable - Attainable - Relevant - Timely).
Specialist Intervention Teaching Assistants 1:1 Tuition / Small Group
One to One Tuition
Identified children across the school are given the opportunity to work daily on specialised 1:1 programs to accelerate learning and address any specific difficulties. These include Dancing Bears (phonics), Rapid Reading, Reading for Meaning, Rapid Maths.
Small Group Tuition:
Small group work tuition has been delivered through a combination of teacher and teaching assistant. This approach enables a class of children to have more adults to support their learning and so gives each child more individual time with a trained member of staff. The teacher is also then able to provide specific challenge and support on those children in greatest need; though not at the expense of the rest of the children in the class. Interventions include Quest, Sandwell Maths, Springboard Maths.
Some of our youngsters are affected by issues beyond their control. These may include problems within the family such as relationships breaking down or bereavement to name just two. This often has an impact on a child's ability to concentrate and learn. They may have issues which they feel unable to discuss either at home or with their class teacher.
We employ several a variety of people to work on a 1:1 basis with these vulnerable children using a range of non -academic strategies. This member of staff also liaises with family, when appropriate. Often this request originates from a family member
These sessions are extremely well received by children. We often notice a difference in the children's emotional well being, behaviour and motivation
How is the impact of Pupil Premium evaluated at Blakeney Primary School?
We will continue to monitor the progress of the pupils who are eligible for Pupil Premium through analysis of their teacher assessments each term. This will inform decisions about interventions and future provision.
In addition, information from lesson observations, children's books and pupil and parent feedback will form key parts of the evaluation process
How can parents and carers contribute to the success of the Pupil Premium scheme?
If your child is eligible for free school meals, it is worth registering them even if they're not going to have the school lunch. It will have a direct impact on the funding and will maximize the support we can provide.
